Professor Department of English Hans Frede Nielsen, B.A. (Anglo-Saxon studies), University of Cambridge 1968; mag.art. (English), Copenhagen University 1971; dr.phil., Odense University 1982. He has been on the staff of the English Department/Institute of Language and Communication since 1975, and teaches courses on the history of English, historical linguistics, the early Germanic languages and historical dialectology. His research interests include historical and comparative Germanic linguistics, English language history, historical dialectology and linguistic history. He is a contributor to Reallexikon der germanischen Altertumskunde (Berlin), he is Editor (since 1983) of the journal NOWELE and Consulting Editor (since 1984) of Journal of English Linguistics. His major publications include Old English and the Continental Germanic Languages (Second edition, Innsbruck 1985); The Germanic Languages (Alabama University Press 1989); Otto Jespersen Facets of his Life and Work (Amsterdam/Philadelphia 1989 (with Arne Juul); The Continental Backgrounds of English and its Insular Development until 1154 (Odense University Press 1998); The Early Runic Language of Scandinavia. Studies in Germanic Dialect Geography (Universitätsverlag C. Winter, Heidelberg 2000). At the moment he works on a sequel to his 1998 book, encompassing the history of the English language from 1154 to 1776. |
