Sprogligt seminar: The Ethnography of Communication:
This is a fun course, a sort of introduction to how one can learn about cultural groups by studying their communication, There's a bit of foundation laying for future studies of language generally and there are hands-on analyses of communicative activities. The course consists of both lectures and workshops. There is one big homework assign which you will submit and which will be a part of the exam.

For the exam you will additionally answer 3 of 6 questions directly related to the course literature. This is a 3 hour exam and no notes or other materials are allowed. The course goals, which will appear on Blackboard and be discussed in the workshops, will guide you towards a successful exam.

Most important at the moment is to visit the courses web 'presence' at Blackboard. We begin on Sept. 8.

The course book 'Ethnography of Communication by M. Saville-Troike' has been ordered to the Studentboghandel, but I haven't heard that it's arrived yet. There's no reading assignment before the first meeting (but if you really want to, start with the first two chapters of the book). There is, however, a little field work assignment: Make a list of the different ways people answer the telephone when you ring them.

All the best!
Dennis
