Americanisation
No study of Global English would be complete unless it examined the spread of American texts and artefacts throughout the world. Few outside the USA - from de Tocqueville to the present-day - have doubted that however much surface variety one sees in the USA, there are significant underlying trends of uniformity - trends which have proved eminently exportable to the wider world. The rift between those who welcome the Americanisation of commerce and culture and those who oppose it remains irreconciliable.
