Scandinavian Area Studies

The Scandinavian Area Studies programme (SAS), at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, is the only programme of its kind in Denmark. It is unique in its philosophy of matching the teaching of the Danish language from scratch with the presentation of Scandinavian cultural, social, political, economic and historical life.

The programme runs for 15 weeks each autumn semester (beginning of September till mid-December) and consists of three courses offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and three courses offered by the Faculty of Humanities:

SAS courses

Danish Language for Beginners
or
Advanced Danish Language

(170 hrs)

(50 hrs) *

Danish/Scandinavian Culture

(50 hrs)

Danish/Scandinavian Modern History

(30 hrs)

Intercultural Marketing:

(30 hrs)

Scandinavian Society and Politics

* Please note that the SAS programme is primarily designed for students with no or very little knowledge of Danish, Swedish or Norwegian. This holds especially for 'Danish Language for Beginners' - (170 hrs). A shorter course 'Advanced Danish Language' (50 hrs) is offered to students with an advanced level in one of the Scandinavian languages (see course descriptions). The availability of this course is determined by the number of applicants. Otherwise, students with good language skills in one of the Scandinavian languages are advised to enroll in the regular teaching programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences and/or the Faculty of Humanities.
