Odense University

Accademic Calendar/Time Off

The University's academic year lasts from 1 September to 31 August. The year is divided into an autumn semester (1/9 - 31/1) and a spring semester (1/2 - 30/6).

Normally there is no teaching in January, June, July and August.

In addition to the normal public holidays, the University is closed on the following days:

Christmas Eve day, New Year's Eve day and Constitution Day (5 June).

The University closes at 12:00 on the day on which the annual University dinner is held.

Employees can arrange with their supervisor to take time off for doctor and dentist consultations. Normally time off is only given to full-time employees.

Certain union agreements entitle employees to time off in connection with special occasions.

In addition, one day off can be granted, if arrangements are made in advance and to the extent that duties permit it, in connection with the following extraordinary circumstances:

  • On the occasion of an employee's own 25th, 40th or 50th anniversary as a state employee;
  • The employee's own wedding or wedding of children or siblings;
  • The employee's or the employee's parents' 25th or 50th wedding anniversary;
  • In cases of serious illness, death or funeral in the closest family, which includes spouse/common-law spouse, children, parents, siblings, grandparents, parents-in-law and children-in-law;
  • In connection with moving.

Certain union agreements permit the day off on 1 May. Employees without this permission may arrange to take the day off on 1 May to the extent that duties permit it.

A request for time off to care for an underage child who is ill and must stay at home can be obliged on the child's first day of illness.
