The City of Odense

With about 175,000 inhabitants, Odense is the regional capital of Funen and the third-biggest city in Denmark. The city is more than a thousand years old and various museums tell about the history of Odense and of Denmark. Odense lies within a short distance of beaches and many leisure activities are offered.

Information guides on Odense and Funen can be required at Odense Tourist Bureau. In these brochures you can read about museums and other places to visit, the social and cultural activities taking place as well as other amusements.

Useful information:

  • 'Odense hver dag' is a small leaflet that tells you (in Danish, English and German) about this month's events in Odense and other places in Odense (can be required at the Tourist Bureau)
  • the local paper 'Ugeavisen' (in Danish) which is distributed once a week, on Wednesdays, tells you about music arrangements, exhibitions, and cinemas.
  • 'Velkommen til Odense' a booklet in Danish, published by the municipality of Odense.

Cultural Activities

A big music festival, the Ringe Festival, takes place during the summer, the last weekend in June or the first in July. Various other music arrangements take place during the summer and Odense also has an open air cinema-week.

Odense can offer various theatres from the traditional to the more experimental kinds. We also have a Concert Hall where the repertoire is mainly classical, but also other types of music and shows are performed. Odense's Concert Hall is also occationally visited by foreign artists and guest performers.

Several music clubs in town offer a variety of music; three cinemas with a total of 19 screens offer different types of films from the famous Hollywood productions to more experimental films; a number of museums and galleries offer a variety of shows and exhibitions.
